The 2027 F1 grid: who is confirmed and who is out of contract

Answer
Confirmed

As of August 2026, only around seven of the 22 drivers have a confirmed seat for 2027. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri are tied to Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren on deals that run to 2028, and Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly and Lewis Hamilton are locked in too. The rest of the grid, including both Mercedes seats and every seat at Aston Martin, Haas and Cadillac, is unconfirmed for 2027, which is why the 2026 silly season is unusually open.

F1's 2026 silly season is one of the most open in years. As of August 2026, only around seven of the 22 drivers hold a confirmed seat for 2027, and both seats at four different teams are still unfilled.[1][3] Below is where every driver stands, split into those already locked in and those whose futures are still on the table.

Confirmed for 2027 and beyond

A handful of the biggest names are already tied down on long-term deals:

  • Max Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull through 2028, on a deal that carries performance-based exit clauses tied to the team's form.[4]
  • Charles Leclerc signed a Ferrari extension that runs to at least the end of 2028.[1]
  • Oscar Piastri is under contract at McLaren through 2028, alongside team-mate Lando Norris, whose current deal runs to 2027.[1]
  • Pierre Gasly is signed at Alpine through 2028.[1]
  • Lewis Hamilton has stated he is contracted to Ferrari through at least 2027.[2]

That core gives Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren a settled look at the front. Everywhere else, the picture is far less clear.

Out of contract at the end of 2026

Most of the grid is unconfirmed for 2027.[3] The open seats, team by team:
