Adrian Newey graduated with first-class honours in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Southampton in 1980, then began his motorsport career at Fittipaldi before moving to March, Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, where he served as Chief Technical Officer for nearly 20 years and contributed to over 200 Grand Prix victories. He departed Red Bull in early 2025 and joined Aston Martin on 1 March 2025 as Managing Technical Partner and a minority team shareholder. In November 2025, team chairman Lawrence Stroll announced that Newey would take on the additional role of Team Principal from the start of the 2026 season, replacing Andy Cowell who moved to Chief Strategy Officer. Aston Martin's 2026 season opened with serious reliability issues linked to the Honda power unit, prompting widespread media speculation about a leadership change, but as of late March 2026 the team officially confirmed Newey continues to lead as Team Principal and Managing Technical Partner. He returned to the paddock at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix and confirmed he is working on a major upgrade package for the AMR26.
