COTA 2026: a brief tactical framework
COTA receives softer tyres (C2, C3, C4) for 2026 and expects largely a one-stop race, though Texas heat could trigger alternatives. Sector 1 stresses fronts; Sector 3 stresses rears. Pit loss runs ~20 seconds, favouring undercut plays. Overtake Mode and active aero replace DRS, reshaping Turn 1 and Turn 12 dynamics.
Tyre allocation and the C2 gambit
Pirelli has selected its C2 hard, C3 medium and C4 soft compounds for Austin, moving one step softer than the C1, C2 and C3 allocation used in 2025. [1] Drivers will receive 8 sets of soft (C4), 3 sets of medium (C3), and 2 sets of hard (C2) tyres, with Q3 qualifiers gaining an extra soft. [2]
The shift to consecutive compounds marks a strategic pivot. Williams predicts teams may favour the softer compounds and potentially avoid using the hard tyre altogether. [1] Last year, COTA saw widespread one-stops built on medium and soft, with the C1 hard barely deployed. The C2 as hard could enable longer stints, potentially favouring a one-stop strategy; however, high temperatures typical of the Texan climate may increase degradation, opening the door for alternative strategies. [3]
Circuit character: front and rear stress
The 5.513km Austin circuit combines high-speed corners, rapid direction changes, and slower sections demanding strong traction. Sector 1 features fast corners and direction changes that challenge the front tyres; Sector 3 features acceleration zones out of slow corners leading to thermal degradation on the rear tyres. [3] Wear is a bigger threat than graining in Austin; both axles are worked, fronts through the fast first sector, then thermal degradation on the rears out of the slow corners in sector three. [4]
Tyre wear, rather than graining, could be a key factor over the weekend, as the asphalt surface is not particularly abrasive, and the ageing effect on the track contributes to high wear levels. [5] Only Turns 9–11 were resurfaced in 2025; the rest of the lap sees rapid degradation.
Overtaking and pit lane
Overtaking has historically been strong at COTA, with around 40 passes outside Lap 1 and restarts; the main opportunities remain into the wide Turn 1 and the heavy-braking Turn 12 hairpin. [5] With the 2026 regulations in force, the lack of DRS and the introduction of Overtake Mode and active aero add a new strategic layer to overtaking opportunities, particularly into Turn 1 and Turn 12. [6]
Pit stop time loss is 19.90 seconds. [6] The short pit-lane delta and relatively low abrasion can support one-stop strategies, though high ambient temperatures and wear on the older asphalt sections can open the door to alternatives. [5]
One-stop versus two-stop
One-stop is the likely plan, with the C2 Hard suited to long stints, though Texas heat is the variable that could break it. [4] The harder C1 played little part in preferred strategies last season, when teams largely built races around the medium and soft; bringing the C2 should make the hard a more competitive long-stint option, which strengthens the case for a one-stop strategy, although its effectiveness will depend on temperatures, degradation and how much performance teams can preserve late in a stint. [7]
What to watch
- Pit window timing: Last year, 13 drivers used a medium-to-soft strategy; Charles Leclerc reversed that sequence to finish third, using the soft's early grip to his advantage.
[7] A lead runner who stops too early (laps 14–17) risks undercut pressure; one who waits past lap 22 risks being overcut by a strategically flexible rival pitting fresh.
- Temperature forecast Friday through Sunday: If ambient heat exceeds expectations, assume two-stop strategies rise in frequency. If mild, C3–C2 one-stops become standard for top runners, and strategy variety shrinks.
