James Vowles began his Formula 1 career at British American Racing in 2001, progressing through Honda Racing F1 and Brawn GP, where he was chief strategist during the 2009 championship-winning season. He stayed on when Mercedes acquired Brawn GP and rose to Motorsport Strategy Director by 2019, playing a central role in eight consecutive Constructors' Championships during the hybrid era. In January 2023 he announced his departure from Mercedes to become Team Principal at Williams Racing, replacing Jost Capito, becoming only the third team principal in the team's history. He holds a BSc in computer science from the University of East Anglia and an MSc in Motorsport Engineering and Management from Cranfield University, and received an honorary Doctor of Science from UEA in 2017. In June 2025 Williams announced a long-term contract extension for Vowles, and he continues in the role through the 2026 season as Team Principal of Atlassian Williams F1 Team.
