Lawson faces late decision on Red Bull seat
Liam Lawson says he may not know until shortly before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix whether he races for Red Bull Racing or Racing Bulls. The outcome depends on Isack Hadjar's recovery from a wrist injury suffered during summer training.[1]
Hadjar missed the Dutch, Italian, and Spanish Grands Prix. Lawson deputised in the Red Bull seat for those events. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed the team will not rush Hadjar's return and will evaluate his fitness before Baku.[1]
Lawson noted the challenge of preparing for two different cars. He told media in Madrid that splitting preparation time makes mental readiness difficult. The decision could arrive as late as the Wednesday or Thursday before the race.[1][2]
Baku preparations complicated by uncertainty
Lawson has grown comfortable in the Red Bull RB22 during his recent outings. He scored points in the Netherlands and finished sixth in Madrid. A return to the Racing Bulls VCARB03 would require readjustment.[2]
The 2026 calendar places the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, with Baku scheduled later in September. Red Bull prioritises Hadjar reaching full fitness before any comeback.[1]
