Herta joins F2 grid for 2026

Colton Herta will compete in the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Hitech TGR. The nine-time IndyCar winner was confirmed for the seat in October 2025 and will also serve as test and reserve driver for Cadillac's incoming F1 team.[1]

The move returns the American to Europe for a full rookie season in the series that runs on the same weekends and circuits as F1. Herta has nine IndyCar victories since 2018 and was named to the Cadillac test role in September 2025.[2]

Background and timeline

Motorsport.com reported the switch as a notable move for an established IndyCar frontrunner. Herta joins the 28-race F2 calendar alongside his Cadillac duties.[3]

The announcement predates the 2026 season opener and positions Herta to gain experience at venues including Spa-Francorchamps. The confirmed program remains unchanged.
