Mercedes Flagged for Austrian GP Curfew Breach but Escape Penalty
The FIA confirmed that Mercedes personnel were present inside the Red Bull Ring during the 11.5-hour restricted overnight window on Friday 26 June 2026, constituting a curfew breach. Because it was the team's first such infringement of the 2026 season, it was logged as a permitted exemption and no sporting penalty was applied. Audi also breached curfew at the same event.
What happened
A statement from the FIA released ahead of Saturday's FP3 and qualifying confirmed that Mercedes had broken curfew on Friday, June 26.
Mercedes personnel associated with car operation were inside the circuit during the 11.5-hour restricted window that began at 22:00 on Friday, 26 June and ran to three hours before FP3 on Saturday. [1]
The FIA confirmed that Mercedes personnel were present within designated operational areas during restricted overnight hours on Friday, violating the championship's curfew rules designed to prevent teams from gaining a competitive advantage through extended work on their cars. [2]
No penalty this time
The breach counts as Mercedes' first of four permitted individual exceptions across the 2026 F1 season. [2] Curfew breaches are fairly common in the paddock across a race weekend and can be committed for any number of reasons; the rule was originally introduced to ensure team personnel did not work on their cars through the night and gain an unfair advantage. [1]
Audi were also found to have broken curfew, and although this was the second infringement of the 2026 campaign for the German marque, no action was taken against them for the breach either. [1] Each team is allowed to use up to five individual exemptions during the season without incurring a penalty. [3]
What is at stake going forward
If either team is found to have breached the FIA's curfew on a further four occasions (Mercedes) or a further three occasions (Audi), they could be at risk of a penalty. [1]
:::analysis The timing of this breach, arriving on the same evening that George Russell claimed pole position at Spielberg in controversial circumstances, adds a layer of procedural texture to Mercedes' Austrian weekend. The team emerged from the event with both a race win and a used curfew joker; neither outcome changes the championship picture materially on its own, but the accumulation of exemptions is worth tracking as the season heads into its second half. With Audi already on two breaches, the German newcomer is burning through its allowance faster than the frontrunners. :::
