Christian Horner Set to Return to the F1 Paddock at the 2026 British Grand Prix

Answer
Confirmed

Christian Horner is expected to walk the Formula 1 paddock at Silverstone during the 2026 British Grand Prix weekend, roughly one year after his sacking by Red Bull. His paddock restriction, part of his Red Bull departure package, expired at the end of May 2026. Both F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem are understood to be expecting his attendance.

A year on: Horner expected back at Silverstone

Christian Horner is set to make his first Formula 1 paddock appearance since being dismissed by Red Bull, with German outlet Bild reporting he has been invited to attend the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone as a guest of Formula 1 and the FIA. [3] Final confirmation of his attendance remains pending, but F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem are both understood to be expecting him. [3]

The departure that kept him out

Horner was removed from his position as Red Bull Team Principal in the days following the 2025 British Grand Prix at the same Silverstone circuit. [1] As part of his Red Bull departure settlement, a restriction barring him from the paddock was included; that restriction expired at the end of May 2026. [3] Sky Sports reported that Horner accepted a sum in the region of £75 million, taking less than he may have been entitled to in order to secure his freedom to return to Formula 1 by the summer of 2026. [1]

Ben Sulayem had already signalled the welcome

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem publicly welcomed the prospect of Horner's return to the sport in May 2026. [6] Horner had also kept a presence on the fringes of the paddock world: PlanetF1 reported he made a surprise visit to the MotoGP paddock in Jerez alongside Domenicali. [8]

Where might Horner go next?

:::analysis A return to the Silverstone paddock as a guest is a significant step, but it is not a role. The more consequential question is what comes next professionally. Horner has been publicly connected with Aston Martin, Alpine, a potential 12th team project, and exploratory talks involving Chinese manufacturer BYD. None of those threads had resolved into a confirmed position as of the race weekend. Walking the paddock at Silverstone will inevitably intensify speculation, but a guest invitation does not signal a specific destination.

:::

The Race noted that discussions with various teams, including the most prominent recent links to Aston Martin, had not yet produced a concrete outcome. [5] Sky Sports reported that Horner is also part of a consortium interested in acquiring a minority stake in Alpine. [2] Meanwhile, BYD's reported interest in joining the grid as a 12th team has added another potential avenue. [7]

Horner led Red Bull across 20 years on the pit wall, accumulating eight drivers' championships and six constructors' titles before his exit. [4] A paddock return at Silverstone, the venue where that chapter closed, would mark a prominent, if still informal, reintroduction to the sport.
