Ocon's Haas Future in Spotlight as Austrian GP Paddock Talks Heat Up

Answer
Confirmed

Esteban Ocon's 2027 contract at Haas is under scrutiny at the Austrian GP. With both Haas seats expiring at season's end, Ocon has been consistently outperformed by teammate Ollie Bearman. Ferrari-backed Rafael Camara, McLaren-contracted Leonardo Fornaroli, and Toyota-linked Yuki Tsunoda have all emerged as potential replacements, while team principal Ayao Komatsu has declined to publicly guarantee Ocon's place.

The seat question sharpens in Spielberg

The Austrian GP paddock at the Red Bull Ring has served as the latest venue for one of the 2026 season's most persistent storylines: whether Esteban Ocon will be a Haas driver in 2027. Both Ocon and teammate Oliver Bearman are out of contract at the end of 2026, and Haas is expected to be a major player in the forthcoming silly season. [1] Team principal Ayao Komatsu has indicated a decision window of "around May, June, July" when asked for an estimate of when Haas will act on 2027. [1]

Qualifying on Saturday underlined the pressure Ocon is operating under. The Frenchman avoided a fourth consecutive Q1 exit, taking 15th place in a Q2 session topped by Kimi Antonelli. [3] Ocon scraped through into Q2 on his final lap, just 0.020 seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz. [1]

Three candidates circle his seat

Haas has yet to decide on its driver line-up for next year; while Bearman's place appears assured unless Ferrari calls him up, Ocon's position is in doubt given his erratic performances for the team. [2] Three names have emerged as potential replacements. Ferrari are placing pressure on Haas to put 2025 F3 champion and Ferrari junior Rafael Camara into the seat alongside Bearman for 2027. [5] McLaren-contracted Leonardo Fornaroli is also in contention, following an impressive two-day TPC test in a 2025 Haas at Jerez earlier this month, which was conducted to allow Haas to evaluate him. [2] Yuki Tsunoda, who lost his Red Bull seat at the end of last season, has also been linked as a possible option given Haas's Japanese connections with Toyota. [6]

Komatsu sidesteps, Ocon pushes back

When asked directly whether he intends to keep Ocon and Bearman together, Komatsu declined to give any reassurance, saying he felt answering that question "might cause a bit of a stir." [6] Both Ocon and Komatsu were aghast at earlier claims of a falling-out over the Miami GP weekend; Ocon refuted that specific speculation at the Canadian GP. [4] Ocon himself has remained focused on on-track recovery. There is no doubt his seat is at risk for 2027, having performed below expectations since joining in 2025; his signing was initially seen as a major coup given his more than 100 grand prix starts, a victory, and four career podiums. [1]

:::analysis Ocon's P10 points finish in the Austrian GP race, climbing from P17 on the grid, gave him a minor positive data point at a critical moment in the season. However, a single championship point does little to close the gap to Bearman in the standings, and Komatsu's carefully worded non-committal answers in the paddock this weekend suggest the team is keeping all options open through the summer. The competing interests of Ferrari and Toyota over Haas's second seat add a commercial layer that goes well beyond simple lap-time comparisons. :::
