Mercedes Weighs Old Spec Test in Singapore
After its new aerodynamic package underperformed in Malaysia, Mercedes is open to running a direct comparison between old and new specifications during Singapore practice to understand the shortfall. The team has not ruled out reverting to the prior configuration if data confirms the upgrade failed to deliver expected gains.
Upgrade Shortfall Prompts Review
Mercedes introduced a significant aerodynamic package at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. The update included revised sidepods, floor changes, and other bodywork elements intended to increase downforce. Simulations and wind-tunnel data had projected a lap-time gain of around 0.3 seconds. On track, the package instead produced a performance loss estimated at up to 0.5 seconds relative to expectations. Rival Red Bull secured victory with Max Verstappen.[1]
Deputy team principal Bradley Lord and other team members noted that gains in high- and medium-speed corners came alongside reduced low-speed performance and higher straight-line drag. The team has scheduled further engineering analysis ahead of the Singapore weekend.[2]
Singapore Comparison Option
One option under consideration is a back-to-back test of the old and new specifications during the limited practice time available in Singapore, a sprint weekend. Running the two cars in different configurations would provide direct data on the upgrade's contribution to the observed shortfall. Mercedes has stated that all options remain open, including a potential longer-term reversion to the previous specification if the new parts are confirmed to have reduced overall performance.[1]
