FIA Tightens 2027 Rotating Wing Rules to Limit Extreme Designs
The FIA has updated its 2027 technical regulations to reduce the permitted transition time for rotating rear wings from 400 milliseconds to 300 milliseconds. The change aims to prevent teams from developing more extreme versions of the movable wing concepts already used by Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren in 2026. Current designs are expected to comply with adjustments.
FIA Updates 2027 Rules on Rotating Wings
The FIA has tightened the 2027 technical regulations to limit development of extreme rotating rear wing concepts. The maximum allowed transition time between straight and corner modes drops from 400 milliseconds to 300 milliseconds, a 25 percent reduction.[1]
Ferrari pioneered the design, known as the Macarena wing, with its upper flap rotating up to 270 degrees. Red Bull and McLaren followed with similar systems that rotate 150 to 160 degrees. All three received FIA approval for 2026 under the original 400-millisecond rule.[1]
The update addresses concerns over increasing mechanical complexity and the risk that teams might exploit the full transition allowance. The FIA seeks to contain further evolution without an outright ban on the concept.[1]
