Wolff: Hamilton Is 'Absolutely' a Title Threat After Barcelona Breakthrough

Answer
Confirmed

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has declared Lewis Hamilton a genuine 2026 championship contender following Hamilton's maiden win for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Wolff warned that Hamilton is difficult to stop once he builds momentum, while Hamilton's victory cut Kimi Antonelli's lead to 41 points with 15 races remaining.

Wolff Puts the Championship on Notice

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has said Lewis Hamilton is a genuine threat for this year's title, stating of his former driver: "I know what he's capable of." The assessment came in the immediate aftermath of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, where Hamilton secured a magnificent maiden Grand Prix victory for Ferrari in Barcelona, bringing Mercedes' 2026 winning streak to an end and beating George Russell and Lando Norris while Kimi Antonelli failed to finish the race. [3]

Although Ferrari's initial choice to start Hamilton on soft tyres did not help him take the lead on the opening lap, they gambled on a three-stop strategy which played out flawlessly as Hamilton gained a free stop under a Virtual Safety Car. [3] The Race's technical analysis found that when Hamilton stopped on lap 41 under the VSC, that left him with tyres five laps fresher than Russell and four laps fresher than Antonelli, giving him a tyre pace advantage of around 0.75 seconds per lap over Russell on pure tyre wear alone. [4]

"If He Smells Blood, He Goes"

Wolff was emphatic when asked whether Hamilton should be considered a genuine title contender. He stressed the point directly: "Yes, absolutely. We are so early in the season. The gap, I don't know what it is, 41 points? You see a DNF robs you of 25 points, and it's wide open." [5] The Mercedes boss also issued a pointed warning about Hamilton's ability to build momentum: "I'd rather not fight with him for a title, because I know what he's capable of. If he smells blood, he goes. I've seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go, and then it's very difficult to stop it." [5]

The win was the first for a non-Mercedes driver this season and moved Hamilton 41 points off championship leader Kimi Antonelli. After five consecutive wins, Antonelli's title campaign stuttered when he retired from the race with a power unit issue. [1] Hamilton now sits second in the drivers' championship, nine points clear of George Russell and firmly in range of Antonelli with 15 races still remaining. [3]

New Regulations as a Factor

Wolff believes the new-for-2026 regulations may suit his former driver more compared to the previous generation of ground effect cars, and also suggested Hamilton's upturn in form could be attributed to the Briton being happier in his personal life. [2] At the age of 41, Hamilton's victory at Barcelona, by nearly 20 seconds in sweltering conditions, makes him the oldest winner of a Grand Prix since Jack Brabham in 1970. [7]

:::analysis Hamilton's Barcelona win does more than close a 41-point gap on paper. It signals a shift in Ferrari's strategic confidence: the willingness to commit early to a three-stop plan against the dominant Mercedes operation shows a team that believes it has both the tyre management and raw pace to play offensively. With Mercedes now carrying visible reliability concerns and Hamilton's momentum visibly building, Wolff's public acknowledgement is as much a warning to his own squad as it is praise for a former champion. The Austrian knows better than anyone how quickly a Hamilton title charge can become self-sustaining once the wins start arriving. :::
