Russell reflects on Austrian GP win: 'I've reminded myself I can do it'

Answer
Confirmed

George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix from pole position at the Red Bull Ring, holding off Max Verstappen to claim his seventh career victory and second of the season. The result moved Russell back to second in the Drivers' Championship, cutting Kimi Antonelli's lead from 50 points to 40 heading into the British GP.

Russell returns to the top step in Spielberg

George Russell described an "incredible" feeling after winning the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, a result that reignited his title challenge. [1] The victory was his second of the season and the seventh Formula One Grand Prix win of his career, secured ahead of Max Verstappen and team-mate Kimi Antonelli.[5]

A clean start and a controlled race

Russell's afternoon was defined by precision from the first moment. He made a smooth getaway from pole position when the lights went out, while Antonelli ran wide on several occasions in the opening laps.[2] Verstappen, after recovering from his qualifying crash, fought through the midfield and eventually pressured Russell in the closing stages, but Mercedes responded with an effective pit strategy that left the Red Bull more than ten seconds adrift after stops.[4] Russell crossed the line 1.6 seconds clear of Verstappen, with Antonelli a further 0.3 seconds back in third.[3]

Pole under the yellow flags

The weekend's qualifying session carried its own drama. Verstappen lost control at Turn 9 on his final flying lap and crashed into the barriers, bringing out local yellow flags just as Russell approached the final sector. The stewards concluded that Russell had encountered a single yellow flag and had lifted sufficiently; his lap time stood and pole position was confirmed.[5] Antonelli, who believed double yellows were being shown, aborted his lap and wound up fourth on the grid.[2]

Championship picture tightens

The Austrian result trimmed Antonelli's championship advantage significantly. Russell reduced his deficit to Antonelli from 50 points to 40, moving back up to second in the Drivers' standings ahead of Lewis Hamilton.[1] Mercedes also strengthened its grip in the Constructors' Championship, which the Silver Arrows lead by nearly 100 points over Ferrari.[3]

Russell's psychological reset

Speaking after the race, Russell pointed to the broader significance of back-to-back strong weekends, having also taken pole at the previous round in Barcelona. "The tough races definitely test you psychologically, and these last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it," he said.[1] He also noted that the performance came on a circuit that does not naturally suit his driving style, calling it a positive sign ahead of his home race at Silverstone the following weekend.[1]

:::analysis Russell's win at the Red Bull Ring carries weight beyond its 25 points. His victory in Melbourne had been followed by a difficult run in which Antonelli collected five wins; the gap had grown to 50 points before Austria. Consecutive pole positions, in Barcelona and now Spielberg, suggest Russell has found a rhythm with the 2026 Mercedes. The test will be whether that consistency translates across the varied layouts of Silverstone and beyond, where Antonelli still holds a commanding lead. :::
