Pirelli Takes the Soft Route for Spielberg: C3, C4, and C5 Confirmed for the 2026 Austrian GP

Pirelli has confirmed the softest end of its 2026 range for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, running 27 to 29 June. The C3 will serve as the P Zero White Hard, the C4 as the P Zero Yellow Medium, and the C5 as the P Zero Red Soft. Why the softest trio makes sense at Spielberg

The Red Bull Ring is a 4.326-kilometre circuit with just ten corners, but its brevity is deceptive. [1] The track sits 660 metres above sea level, incorporates an elevation change of 63 metres, and strings together heavy braking zones with violent acceleration phases in quick succession, forming what Pirelli describes as a classic "stop and go" layout. [1] Because the lap is so short, the tyres cycle through heating and loading events far more rapidly than at most venues.

Pirelli notes that outright tyre wear is not the decisive factor at Spielberg. [1] The ageing asphalt carries high levels of micro- and macro-roughness that generate substantial heat inside the compounds, making thermal management the primary strategic variable. [2] Rear tyres are especially exposed due to the circuit's heavy traction demands, while the 2026 power units introduce additional risk of front lock-ups under downhill braking at corners such as Turn 3 and Turn 4. The 2026 tyre context

For 2026, Pirelli trimmed its dry-weather range from six compounds to five, running C1 through C5. [3] The C6 was dropped because the performance delta between it and the C5 was deemed insufficient to generate meaningful strategic variety. [3] The remaining five compounds were engineered with a wider and more consistent gap between each step to encourage different race strategies. [4]

The thinner mountain air at over 600 metres also reduces aerodynamic downforce on the 2026 cars, causing greater tyre slip and amplifying thermal degradation relative to lower-altitude venues. [1]

Track and ambient temperatures remain a wildcard. Late-June Styria can approach the conditions seen at recent Spanish rounds, but the mountainous terrain and surrounding forests create conditions for sudden weather changes, which could compress or expand the strategic window considerably. :::
