Over half the 2026 F1 grid faces contract expiry, making silly season one of the most consequential in years

Answer
Confirmed

With as many as 15 of the 22 drivers on the 2026 Formula 1 grid potentially out of contract at the season's end, the transfer market is unusually wide open. Key names at risk include Kimi Antonelli, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, George Russell, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz, and Alex Albon, among others, as the Austrian GP weekend adds fresh scrutiny to every lap.

A paddock full of auditions

Formula 1 heads to the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Grand Prix with a subplot that rivals anything happening on track: a historic glut of contract situations set to resolve by December. With as many as 15 of the 22 drivers on the grid potentially out of contract at the season's end, the 2026 silly season could be one of the most intriguing in years. [4] The 2026 season arrives as the most significant regulatory reset in a generation, and as teams prepare to discover whether their technical bets have paid off, an equally compelling subplot is taking shape in the paddock: the driver market. [4]

The teams with the most uncertainty

Only four teams head into 2026 somewhat safe in the knowledge that at least one of their driver duo should remain unchanged for 2027: Red Bull, Alpine, Ferrari, and McLaren. [5] At the other end of the spectrum, Cadillac are one of seven teams whose driver duo do not have a confirmed seat for 2027, meaning this year's silly season could get very messy. [5]

At Mercedes, rookie Kimi Antonelli's position is among the most closely watched. Antonelli is one of the more intriguing cases: the teenager was only officially confirmed for 2026 in October last year, and while his performances have been exceptional, his deal technically expires this season. [1] His team-mate George Russell carries his own uncertainty; Russell's contract is understood to run into 2027, though the way it was presented could still leave both team and driver free to do something different next year. [2]

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are currently contracted only until the end of what is proving to be a gruelling first year of Aston Martin's works partnership with Honda. [2] At Haas, both Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon are contracted until the end of the current season. [2] At Williams, both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz are on deals that expire at season's end. [1]

The Verstappen shadow

Silly season kicked off earlier than usual in 2026 when four-time World Champion Max Verstappen admitted in Japan that he was pondering his future. The Dutchman has a contract to race with Red Bull until at least the end of 2028, but his deal is understood to have break clauses. [1] That uncertainty has ripple effects across the whole market: drivers such as George Russell and Max Verstappen also have clauses or options in their contracts in their favour, but many of those racing in the second half of the field are up for renewal or option activation at the end of the year. [6]

Meanwhile, McLaren remains the settled exception. McLaren have F1's newest champion Lando Norris committed to the team until at least the end of the 2027 campaign, while team-mate Oscar Piastri is locked in until 2028. [5]

:::analysis The sheer density of expiring contracts in a regulation-change year creates an unusually volatile driver market. Teams that have nailed the new technical rules have leverage; those who have not face pressure to re-sign proven names or take risks on emerging talent. Every race weekend between now and Abu Dhabi will function as a performance review, and the Austrian GP is no exception. A standout result this weekend could meaningfully accelerate or complicate negotiations for several drivers simultaneously. :::
