Helmut Marko Named Ambassador for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix
Helmut Marko, who retired as Red Bull motorsport adviser at the end of 2025, has been appointed ambassador for the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. He will be present at the Austrian Grand Prix on 26-28 June 2026. His brief also covers the circuit's MotoGP round. The appointment was announced on 9 April 2026 at an event in Vienna.
Marko steps into ambassador role after 2025 retirement
Dr Helmut Marko has taken on a new role as ambassador for the Red Bull Ring, home of the Austrian Grand Prix, which will take place on 26-28 June.
The 82-year-old stepped down from his position as motorsport adviser and leader of the junior team at Red Bull at the end of 2025.
The appointment was revealed on 9 April during the "Primavera Stiria" event.
Speaking during an event in Vienna, Marko confirmed his new role to Austrian publication OE24. [2] Marko worked as an adviser to Red Bull from the time it joined the Formula 1 grid in 2005 and oversaw the Red Bull Junior Team since its founding as a driver development programme in 2001. He was instrumental in the development of four-time champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, as well as other drivers including Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Pierre Gasly. [1]
Remit spans both F1 and MotoGP
Marko is now the ambassador for the Red Bull Ring in Austria, home of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix and the Austrian round of MotoGP. [4] The circuit's CEO, Thomas Uberall, explained the reasoning behind the choice: "He is originally from Styria, and the track is in Styria. We get along well, and he has a good relationship with Red Bull." This role will involve Marko in activities related not only to Formula 1 but also to MotoGP, broadening his influence in motorsport. [2]
Marko confirmed he will also attend the Red Bull Ring Classics in Spielberg in May, as well as the Formula 1 race at the end of June. [4]
Long-term context: a circuit secured through 2041
The iconic Austrian Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar through 2041 inclusive, following the long-term extension of Formula 1's contract with promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG. [5] The Red Bull Ring confirmed the deal on its official website. [6] Marko's ambassadorial tenure therefore coincides with one of the most secure venue agreements in the sport's modern era, giving him a long runway in the role. [1]
:::analysis Marko's shift from day-to-day team operations to a circuit-facing ambassador position mirrors a broader pattern in F1, where experienced figures remain tied to the sport in promotional capacities after stepping back from competitive roles. His dual brief covering both F1 and MotoGP events at Spielberg reflects the Red Bull Ring's growing importance as a multi-discipline motorsport venue, not merely a single-series fixture. Whether an ambassador role of this kind carries meaningful influence over race-day operations or is primarily ceremonial will become clearer once the 2026 Austrian GP weekend unfolds. :::
