Antonelli Wins from 19th in Red-Flagged Monza Thriller; Mercedes 1-2 Extends Championship Lead to 66 Points
Kimi Antonelli charged from 19th on the grid to win the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, overtaking teammate George Russell on lap 50. The decisive moment came via a Virtual Safety Car pit-stop strategy split that handed Antonelli fresh mediums while Russell remained on ageing hard tyres. Charles Leclerc crashed heavily on lap three, triggering a red flag that neutralized tire degradation across the field.
Podium and Result
George Russell finished second, crossing the line some four seconds behind Antonelli, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen completed the podium finishers. [1] Lando Norris beat McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri to fourth via their own close fight, with Lewis Hamilton the lead Ferrari in sixth. [1]
Kimi Antonelli put on a show in his home country, becoming the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966. [3] Antonelli took the lead from Russell at the start of Lap 18, a sensational comeback from the championship leader, who took a back-of-the-grid engine penalty at Monza. [1]
The Leclerc Crash and Red Flag
Leclerc was out of the race at the end of Lap 2. Having been passed by Verstappen as Oscar Piastri now went on the attack, Leclerc spun out at the Parabolica and hit the tyre barrier hard. [1] Leclerc skated across the gravel and veered into the outside wall at high speed, escaping unhurt but bringing out the red flag for lengthy barrier repairs. [2]
Strategy: The VSC Pivot
After pulling off a sharp opening-lap move on pole-sitter Pierre Gasly and surviving the Lap 3 red flag triggered by Charles Leclerc's crash, Russell looked poised to convert his front-row start into a commanding victory. Instead, a critical strategic gamble under a late Virtual Safety Car completely upended the race, leaving Russell defenseless on fading rubber while Antonelli charged from the back of the grid to snatch the win. [6]
The decisive strategic moment arrived on Lap 29 when Lance Stroll stopped on circuit and triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Mercedes called Antonelli in for fresh medium tyres, while Verstappen also stopped. Russell stayed out on his ageing hard compound, retaining track position but committing himself to an exceptionally long final stint. [5]
Antonelli dispatched Gasly almost immediately, then passed Norris before closing on Hamilton. [5] On lap 50 of 53, he took the lead for good to win his home Grand Prix. Russell finished second, 3.857 seconds behind. Max Verstappen in the Red Bull-Ford finished third, 14.718 seconds behind. [4]
Championship Impact
Antonelli (267) extends his Drivers' Championship lead to 66 points over Russell (201) in second, and 76 points over Lewis Hamilton (191) in third. [4] A 1-2 finish for Mercedes sees them extend their lead over Ferrari to a massive 120 points. [1]
