Kimi Antonelli became the youngest ever Formula 1 World Champion as third place in the Mexico City Grand Prix was enough for the Mercedes driver to claim the 2026 crown. ^[4] Antonelli entered Sunday's 71-lap race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez needing only to finish ninth to claim a maiden F1 title, regardless of where rivals Hamilton and Mercedes team mate George Russell finished. ^[5]

Ferrari's Lap-One Crisis

The race's trajectory was shaped by chaos on the opening lap. Lewis Hamilton was left fuming after colliding with his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc on the opening lap of the Mexican Grand Prix. Hamilton started on pole but was challenged by Leclerc in the opening few corners before making a move around the outside of turn four. The two though came to a collision though heading into turn five, with Leclerc going off the track and taking the lead, while Max Verstappen passed Hamilton for second. ^[8]

Charles Leclerc received a five-second time penalty at the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix following an aggressive opening-lap move with teammate Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. ^[9] Verstappen took the lead after Charles Leclerc was handed a time penalty for cutting the track on the first lap when battling polesitter Hamilton. ^[10]

The Red Flag and Strategic Restart

The Mexican Grand Prix was red-flagged and stopped after Valtteri Bottas crashed at turn one. The FIA confirmed race was red-flagged as the Cadillac caused significant damaged to the TecPro barriers at the first corner. The race was stopped after 46 out of 71 laps. ^[11]

Hamilton had pitted under the initial safety car to trade his medium tyres for softs, and dropped out behind Antonelli.

Race control originally announced the restart order for the top four would be Max Verstappen leading ahead of Charles Leclerc, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton. However they later revised the starting order, moving Hamilton in front of Antonelli.

Hamilton guessed that Verstappen would take to the lap 63 restart by backing up the pack, before pinning the throttle out of the Foro Sol's Turn 13; and that's exactly how it unfolded.

Verstappen was reporting inconsistent engine braking, but he was keeping Hamilton outside the one-second window. The Red Bull driver's defense ultimately held, preserving his victory despite Hamilton's late pressure through the final laps.

Championship Standings Impact

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has secured the 2026 World Drivers' Championship following the Mexico City GP, becoming the youngest-ever world champion in Formula 1 history. The Silver Arrows' Constructors battle with Ferrari also remains alive after a crucial Mexico City weekend.
