Antonelli Extends Dominance in Strategic Masterclass as Norris Misses Pit Entry Under VSC
Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth victory of 2026 at the Madring, capitalizing on a Virtual Safety Car that caught polesitter Lando Norris missing the pit entry. Norris' slow stop and lost track position handed the win to Mercedes, extending Antonelli's championship lead to 81 points with nine races remaining.
The Podium
Kimi Antonelli took victory in the first race around the Madring, and was accompanied on the podium by Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. [1] Behind the top three, Charles Leclerc took fourth for Ferrari, with George Russell finishing fifth. [2]
Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix to claim his eighth victory of the F1 season, and open up a huge 81-point lead over George Russell. [3]
The Decisive Moment
The opening laps saw plenty of clashes up and down the field, with Norris narrowly holding onto the lead from pole position as Antonelli cut two corners during his concerted efforts to pass the Briton. [1] By Lap 15 the gap to Antonelli in second had grown to 6.2 seconds. [4] The race looked like Norris' to lose.
The pivot came when a brake failure for Lance Stroll ended his race on lap 13 and triggered a virtual safety car. [5] Antonelli ultimately didn't need to overtake him on track thanks to a Virtual Safety Car, which played perfectly into Mercedes' hands but ruined Norris' chances for victory. [1]
Norris arrived at the pit entry a fraction too late, the braking point at racing speed putting the entry well behind the window of decision, and could not commit to the turn. He completed an extra lap, surrendering track position and the time he had built. [4]
Strategy Execution
The strategic picture diverged sharply at the VSC. Mercedes, who had started Antonelli on Mediums, responded immediately and pitted him for Hards while Red Bull Racing, who started Verstappen on Softs, did the same which meant neither driver would need to stop again. [6] Norris was called into the pits the moment the VSC period ended. Staying out was an option, but McLaren brought him in anyway, and a slow stop compounded the damage. [5]
A tale of contrasting pit stops unfolded as the Italian gained the net race lead while a slow change dropped Norris behind both Antonelli and Verstappen. Despite expressing worries with his steering, the 20-year-old inherited control of the race once Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who didn't box during the VSC, gave up on his hopes for a Safety Car and finally peeled into the pits after 48 laps. Other Incidents and Retirements
Brake issues saw retirements for both Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll, the latter bringing out a Virtual Safety Car early in the race. [2] Sergio Perez retired for Cadillac midway through the Spanish Grand Prix. Carlos Sainz, in his first hometown race, also retired towards the end of proceedings. [2]
Until the penultimate lap, when the Red Bull racer cut the Turn 5 chicane after encountering backmarker traffic and the reigning champion unsuccessfully put him under pressure.
Championship Impact
Lando Norris takes the opportunity to close to within five points of the seven-time champion.
In the constructors' standings, Mercedes extends its advantage, while Ferrari loses more ground to McLaren.
