F1 returns to Africa
Formula 1 has signed a 10-year agreement to host the African Grand Prix at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda.[1] The event marks the sport's return to the continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.[3]
The new track will be developed to FIA Grade 1 standards next to the under-construction Kigali International Airport, about 40 km south of the capital.[2] Construction is expected to finish early in the next decade, with the first race set for the early 2030s.[1]
The circuit design incorporates the region's natural elevation changes to create a challenging layout with strong spectator sightlines.[2] Partners include WurzDesign and Tilke Engineers.[1]
Next steps
F1 and the FIA will announce further details on the exact race date and construction milestones in due course.[3] The agreement is presented by Visit Rwanda and backed by the Rwandan government.[1]
