Leclerc 'Very Ashamed' After Q3 Crash Leaves Him Tenth on the Barcelona Grid

Answer
Confirmed

Charles Leclerc crashed out of Q3 at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on his very first flying lap, suffering a snap of oversteer at Turn 4 that sent him head-on into the barrier. He will start Sunday's 66-lap race from tenth place. Leclerc admitted there were 'no excuses' for the mistake and said he felt 'very ashamed' to have squandered a genuinely competitive weekend.

What happened at Turn 4

Leclerc crashed on his first flying lap in Q3, suffering a snap of oversteer on the exit of the long right Turn 4 before spearing off into the gravel and making heavy head-on contact with the barrier. [1] Leclerc was unharmed in the incident, which brought out a red flag, and means he will start P10 for Sunday's 66-lap race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. [1]

The Ferrari driver suffered an unusual snap at Turn 4 and overcorrected, resulting in a trip through the gravel before he crashed into the barrier. [2] He was able to climb out of the car unaided after the impact, although the medical car was deployed as the impact registered over the required automatic threshold. [4]

Leclerc's explanation

Leclerc pointed to a deliberate but misjudged attempt to address what he identified as his one weak sector. "I tried to release the brakes earlier, trying to carry more speed as I knew it was the main weakness, if not the only weakness, because we were very fast in all corners," Leclerc said. [4] "I tried to carry more speed in, it worked out, but then I went on traction on the dirty side of the track and lost the rear, but there's not much to excuse myself." [4]

'No excuses' on the brake switch

Leclerc said he felt "very ashamed" about crashing out of qualifying at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, and refused to blame the incident on recent brake changes. [3] Leclerc switched brake disc supplier ahead of Sunday's race after crashing out of his home Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, opting to copy teammate Lewis Hamilton's move from Brembo to Carbon Industrie material, something the seven-time world champion has credited with helping his recent impressive form. [3] Leclerc stated: "No, no, no, there's none of that and honestly, I adapted very well straight from FP2, I felt very at ease with it and there's nothing of that, there's no excuses on trying to find a reference or whatsoever." [4]

The wider picture

Leclerc said he felt "very ashamed, after the last three weekends that have been particularly difficult for me to find pace for issues I had, today and this weekend, I think everything felt really, really good and in these days I need to deliver and I didn't." [4] It continued an underwhelming run for Leclerc, who is without a podium since Japan in March and crashed out from third at his home race in Monaco last weekend. [6]

Mercedes' George Russell bounced back in style by claiming pole ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and championship leader Kimi Antonelli. [2] The result is made worse by Hamilton qualifying second, so he is in a good position to extend his points advantage over Leclerc after jumping ahead following his podiums in Canada and Monaco. [6]

:::analysis Leclerc had genuine pace across the full Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya lap this weekend; his self-diagnosis (Turn 4 as the lone weak point) is entirely consistent with the circumstances of the crash. The brake-supplier switch complicates the narrative, but Leclerc's insistence that he had adapted well by FP2 is plausible given how comfortably he progressed through Q1 and Q2. Starting tenth on the dirty side of the grid makes an immediate recovery difficult, but the 66-lap distance and Barcelona's historically strategy-rich nature mean points are far from out of reach. The more corrosive damage may be to Leclerc's championship position, with Hamilton now placed directly ahead on the grid and likely to extend his lead. :::

Despite the frustration, Leclerc did not close the door on Sunday. "I think we can do great tomorrow, and I think we can come back," he said. "So, I'm optimistic for tomorrow, but for now, the disillusion of quali is all I can think of." [7]
