Leclerc Crashes Out of Barcelona Q3 After Brake Disc Experiment
Charles Leclerc crashed out of Q3 qualifying at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on his first flying lap, hitting the barriers at Turn 4 after a snap of oversteer. He will start Sunday's race from P10. Leclerc, who had switched from Brembo to Carbone Industrie brake discs following his Monaco retirement, described himself as 'feeling very ashamed' and offered no excuses for the incident.
A damaging end to a strong Barcelona qualifying
Charles Leclerc crashed on his first flying lap in Q3, suffering a snap of oversteer on the exit of the long right Turn 4 before spearing off into the gravel and making heavy head-on contact with the barrier.
A red flag was immediately shown, and Leclerc climbed out of the Ferrari unhurt.
Having mingled at the top end for most of the session, Leclerc ended up failing to set a lap time in Q3, leaving him to start Sunday's 66-lap race from P10.
His Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, by contrast, secured a front-row berth alongside pole-sitter George Russell.
How it happened at Turn 4
On his first Q3 run, Leclerc lost control of the car coming through Turn 4, snapping to the right and then over-correcting to the left before going across the gravel and into the wall.
He was able to climb out of the car unaided after the impact, although the medical car was deployed as the impact registered over the required automatic threshold.
Leclerc himself pointed to the precise chain of events in his own words. "I tried to release the brakes earlier, trying to carry more speed as I knew it was the main weakness, if not the only weakness, because we were very fast in all corners," he said.[1]
He elaborated: "Turn 4 was the weak corner for me so I released the brakes and I think I carried quite a lot more speed in, which was okay mid-corner but I ended up on the dirtier part of the track and lost the car." [1]
The brake disc experiment
The crash arrived at the end of a weekend-long technical experiment for Leclerc. He had switched brake disc supplier ahead of the Barcelona race after crashing out of his home Monaco Grand Prix the previous weekend, opting to copy teammate Lewis Hamilton's move from Brembo to Carbone Industrie material, something the seven-time world champion has credited with helping his recent form. [4] [6]
The Monegasque driver had struggled over recent races with a lack of feeling from his braking configuration, and after his Monaco exit, where cold brakes triggered a crash into the wall after a safety car restart, Leclerc explained he had been suffering a lot. [6] Hamilton had been using Carbone Industrie brake discs and pads, as opposed to Leclerc's Brembo configuration, and for the Barcelona Grand Prix, Leclerc trialled the Carbone Industrie set-up from FP1 onwards. [8]
Despite the crash, Leclerc confirmed the new brake configuration was not at the root of his accident. [7] He had switched to a similar configuration to Hamilton but made clear the brake change did not contribute to his error. [3]
'No excuses'
A frustrated Leclerc was left feeling "ashamed" of himself after the crash, which left him 10th on Sunday's grid. [3] The incident continued an underwhelming run for the Monegasque, who is without a podium since Japan in March and had already crashed out from third at his home race in Monaco the weekend prior. [3]
With Ferrari looking competitive this weekend, Leclerc indicated a race comeback through the field may still be possible. [7]
:::analysis Leclerc carried strong pace through Q1 and Q2 before the Turn 4 error ended his qualifying. The brake disc switch from Brembo to Carbone Industrie was a meaningful technical variable heading into the weekend, and that context makes the crash particularly costly: any data on how the new configuration performs under maximum attack in qualifying conditions was lost with the incident. Starting from P10 on the cleaner side of the grid does leave Leclerc with some strategic flexibility, particularly given Ferrari's race pace has appeared strong at this circuit. Whether the Carbone Industrie configuration proves its worth over a full race distance will be a key subplot on Sunday. :::
