Thursday's Russell dominance

George Russell topped the opening one-hour session after posting a 1m 45.387s, leaving him four tenths clear of Verstappen, as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the top three.^[1]

Isack Hadjar, making his return after missing the last three rounds due to a wrist injury, complained about the brakes on his Red Bull pulling to one side, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri reported vibrations in the opening minutes.^[1]

George Russell topped a first practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli exited early. Antonelli retired his smoking W17 after 25 minutes, citing an apparent hydraulics issue, at a time when he was leading the way. The championship leader, 81 points clear in the drivers' standings, finished fifth quickest, 0.878s behind Russell's timesheet-topping one minute 45.387s.^[2]

FP2 saw Russell extend his grip even further. George Russell comfortably set the pace during Thursday's second practice session ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, leading the way from Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Russell worked his way down to a time of 1m 43.347s with a series of runs on Pirelli's soft compound tyre, putting him half a second up on championship leader Antonelli, and a further three tenths clear of Verstappen.^[3]

The second session saw Arvid Lindblad become the first driver to cause a red flag, after he struck the wall in the tight castle section.^[4]

Verstappen's Friday riposte

The session saw drivers including Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc venture into the runoff areas, as powerful gusts of wind played havoc.

Just 0.111s separated the top three, with Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all appearing to be in the mix ahead of a crucial qualifying session.

Rookie outings in FP1

Lawson's best FP1 lap of 1:46.440 put him seventh on the timesheets, before he improved to a 1:45.681 during the second session.

The rookie had already experienced a trip into a run-off area during FP1 but recovered to post a 1:46.601 and finish eighth.

Both drivers competed for Racing Bulls in FP1 and all three sessions; neither was a mandatory rookie outing replacement. Both were full-time grid entries contesting the full weekend.
