F1 Commission Approves Shorter Races From 2027
The F1 Commission has agreed to reduce standard Grand Prix distance from 305 km to 290 km starting in 2027. The change aligns with revised power unit regulations and increased fuel flow rates. It cuts most races by two or three laps while preserving the two-hour racing limit.
Shorter Races Confirmed for 2027
The Formula 1 Commission agreed on 21 September 2026 to reduce the standard Grand Prix distance from 305 km to 290 km beginning in 2027.[1] The adjustment corresponds to two or three fewer laps at most circuits.[2]
The move supports refinements to the 2027 power unit regulations on fuel flow.[3] The internal combustion engine share of power rises to 58-42 in 2027 and 60-40 in 2028, requiring higher fuel consumption.[2]
A two-hour limit on actual racing time remains in place. The existing three-hour maximum elapsed time for interrupted races will be replaced by a variable hard stop time that depends on local conditions.[1]
The change still requires ratification by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.[3]
